The San Joaquin Council of Governments (SJCOG) is updating its Regional Transportation Plan and Sustainable Communities Strategy to reflect the needs of a growing region.

In the spring, SJCOG hosted public workshops, and participated in a number of community meetings and events throughout San Joaquin County to gather initial input on transportation needs in the region. More than 1000 residents added their voice to a conversation about connecting San Joaquin County. With the input gathered, transportation planners have drafted scenarios representing potential alternative futures for the region.

“Transportation is about more than just cars and roads,” said Kim Anderson, project manager at SJCOG. “It’s about providing alternative and sustainable ways to connect residents to the places they need to go, both within the county and beyond.”

Residents are encouraged to provide feedback by participating in an interactive online activity guiding them through questions and scenarios related to cars, public transit, walking, and bicycling.

The deadline has been extended for local participation; the English public input portal will be available on line at www.sjcog.org/rtp until Friday, Oct. 13, with the Spanish public input portal open at the same address until Friday, Oct. 20.

“The goal of our Regional Transportation Plan and Sustainable Communities Strategy is to look at what the region needs tomorrow, as well as today,” said Anderson. “As one of the fastest growing counties in the nation, we need to ensure a transportation system that addresses sustainability and serves the needs of our diverse communities.”

The San Joaquin Council of Governments is a joint powers authority comprised of the County of San Joaquin and the cities of Stockton, Lodi, Manteca, Tracy, Ripon, Escalon, and Lathrop.

The agency serves as the federally-designated metropolitan planning organization, the state designated regional transportation planning agency, the implementing agency for the habitat conservation program, the local transportation authority (overseeing Measure K, the local half-cent transportation sales tax), and as a technical resource for the San Joaquin region.
