A new scorer’s table has been put into service in the Escalon High School gym. A dedication ceremony on Wednesday night, Jan. 3 was hosted between the JV and varsity boys basketball contests, with the table dedicated in memory of Mike Backovich.

The longtime teacher and coach at EHS passed away in February, 2017.

“Coach Backovich lost his battle with brain cancer but lives on the through the lives he has impacted throughout his 38 years at Escalon High School,” fellow teacher and coach Greg Largent said in emceeing the dedication ceremony. “Coach Backo forever roamed the sidelines in football, spent many years in the dugout for the Lady Cougars softball team but he is most remembered in this gym for coaching the varsity boys basketball team to a Sac-Joaquin Section Championship title in 2005 over the rival Ripon Indians at Arco Arena.”

On hand for the dedication ceremony on Wednesday evening were his wife Teresa Backovich and the couple’s two sons, Marc and Scott.

Donations made in Coach Backovich’s honor to the Escalon Sports Boosters helped contribute to the purchase of the new scorer’s table. The crowd gathered in the gym for the TVL contest pitting Escalon against visiting Riverbank joined in a moment of silent to honor Backovich before the varsity tipoff.
