Getting in two games at the Oakdale Rotary JV Tournament before rain washed away Friday’s schedule, the Escalon JV baseball boys won one and lost one.

They opened up the tournament with a Wednesday afternoon game against Lincoln of Stockton. The young Cougars couldn’t get much going against the Trojans and lost in a shutout, 13-0.

“We only had one hit, a double by Noah Rast,” explained head coach Ken Baptista.

The coach said Lincoln was a very sound fundamental team and they capitalized on the miscues of the Cougars.

“Luke Anderson pitched, but he struggled to throw strikes,” Baptista said. “He went just one-and-two-thirds innings.”

Lincoln scored seven runs in the second inning, six more in the third to take a lead they would never relinquish.

Demetrius Teixeira came on in relief of Anderson but he struggled as well. Ty Harris was solid on the mound in relief of Teixeira, going one-and-a-third innings, giving up just two hits and striking out one.

After the shutout loss in the first game, the JV Cougars bounced back with a win over Buhach Colony on Thursday, April 5.

Escalon took a 13-9 win in that contest, with several players joining the hit parade in the victory.

“Bryce McPherrin was 3-for-4 with two RBI, Garrett Cox was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Luke Anderson was 2-for-4 with four RBI,” said Baptista.

Rast allowed six runs in four innings pitched, Zack Hearn came on in relief and pitched three strong innings.

“We were supposed to play Gregori on Friday but got rained out,” Baptista added.

The game has been rescheduled for Thursday, April 26 at Escalon, and was one of three contests in the Rotary Tournament that were rained out on Friday.

“Now we get back to league play,” the coach said of his JV Cougars taking on Trans-Valley League rival Ripon this week. A scheduling change has the team traveling to play at Ripon on Wednesday, April 11 and then hosting the Indians on Friday, April 13.
