It was a full house Saturday evening, Oct. 19 at the Escalon American Legion Post on Second Street, as a crowd gathered for the popular chili cook off hosted annually at the post rooms.

Offered as part of the third Saturday of the month community dinner program put on several times a year by the local Legion members, the competition this year featured a dozen chili entries.

While diners could taste test as many of the chili options as they wanted, they also could fill their dinner plates with a variety of salads, enjoy hot dogs or make them into chili dogs, along with garlic bread, beverages and desserts.

Judges brought in to taste test the chili entries rated each on flavor and spice level, then compared notes to decide on the first, second and third place winners.

Taking home third place and a $20 prize was Manh Tran; the entry by Gary Brenner took second place and came with a $30 cash prize. Crowned as this year’s champion, first place honors went to DeeAnn Blowers, who received a $50 cash prize for her efforts.

“It has taken me forever; I’m always one behind George,” Blowers said, noting that her chili typically falls short when compared to the entry by Post member George ‘Pineapple’ Tavares.

But this year, a new blend of flavors rose to the top, and Blowers had the winning entry.

“It’s just awesome,” she said, smiling after the results were announced. “Just to know I beat George.”

Dozens enjoyed the community dinner; donations are accepted for the meal but not required. The American Legion hosts the dinners throughout the year as a way to thank community members for their support.

The Legion Post is also planning its Veterans Day program, scheduled for Monday, Nov. 11.

There will be a parade on Main Street beginning at 10:30 a.m., followed by a Memorial Ceremony at the Escalon Community Center Memorial Wall at 11:30 a.m.

After the ceremony, a BBQ lunch will be served with eat in and take out options available. The lunch runs from noon to 3 p.m.

Tickets are $15 each and the plate includes a barbecued half-chicken, salad, beans and roll. Beverages are available for in person dining at the Community Center; to-go orders are asked to be picked up by 2 p.m.

For more information about the day’s activities or for tickets to the lunch, call Fallon Nunes at 209-484-3641. Tickets will also be available at the door.
