Probation Search Yields Burglary Tools, Arrests
Matthew Davis

An early morning traffic stop on Thursday, March 10 in Escalon resulted in an arrest.

According to police, Officer K.J. Vandagriff made a traffic stop on a vehicle with an obstructed trailer plate shortly after 1 a.m., making the stop in the area of Sierra and Yosemite. It was then determined the vehicle registration was expired as well.

The driver Matthew Davis, 31, of Ripon was contacted, along with his two passengers, a 29-year-old female from Modesto, and a 33-year-old male from Manteca. Officer Carl Poortinga arrived to assist Vandagriff, and they learned that the two passengers were on probation and had search clauses as a condition of their probation. Davis also had two warrants for his arrest. The first was for domestic violence out of the Ripon Police Department with no bail, and the other was for possession of controlled substance out of Escalon with a bail of $50,000. He was arrested on the warrants.

A probation search of the vehicle located two California trailer license plates. The first license plate was from a stolen trailer out of Stanislaus County and the second was reported as a lost or stolen plate out of Ceres Police. The search also turned up a set of keys, and some of them were “shaved.” Bolt cutters, screwdrivers, gloves and other items were located that led the officers to believe they were being used to conduct burglaries. The items were linked to Davis and he was booked into the San Joaquin County jail for the two warrants, and the additional charges of possession of burglary tools, and stolen property.
