With an ocean theme, Breaker Rock Beach Vacation Bible School was staged at Escalon Presbyterian Church, Monday through Friday, June 17 through 21.

The VBS focused around Romans 12:2, God’s rock-solid truth in a world of shifting sands.

Grade levels invited to attend were from Pre-K up through sixth grade, while seventh grade students on up to church elders were on hand to serve as teachers and assistants.

“We had 58 kids registered,” said VBS coordinator Lisa McCune. “And we had about 35 volunteers throughout the course of the week.”

All the grade levels had ocean-related names, with the Pre-K and kindergarten classes known as the Crabs; first and second graders were Starfish, third and fourth graders were the Sea Lions and fifth and sixth graders were Orcas.

Along with starting the day all together for some Bible stories, the classes also got to rotate through several stations, from crafts to games to music and the popular snack area, which also featured beach-themed goodies.

The attendees were encouraged to bring in donations for C.A.R.E., Community Action Resources of Escalon, the local food pantry, which Escalon Presbyterian Church and the Escalon Ministerial Association selected as the mission outreach for the week.

“It has been going smoothly,” McCune said of the VBS. “The kids are having fun in their lessons and we couldn’t do it without our volunteers. It’s so fun to see the kids who were once little campers come back here to be the helpers in the classes.”

The largest class during the week was the first and second grade group, running between 17 and 19 kids each day.

VBS ran during the morning and on Friday, June 21 featured not only the regular VBS day but also a special closing program. All the classes took the stage to perform some songs while Escalon Presbyterian Church Pastor Troy Onsager also provided a greeting, an opening prayer, offered thanks to those involved in the VBS and gave a mission report.

Families were invited to the closing program and also had the chance to enjoy a free lunch of hot dogs, chips, drinks and watermelon afterward to close out the weeklong program.
