Does your grandma play basketball? She might, or she could.

Two teams affiliated with the Granny Basketball(R) League are participating in the Kings’ “Women’s Empowerment Night” in an exhibition game scheduled for Sunday, March 9 at the Adventist Health Arena in Stockton to introduce area spectators to 1920s style women’s basketball. The Columbia Gold Diggers and the California Poppies will demonstrate their stuff at 1:20 p.m., prior to the Stockton Kings vs. San Diego Clippers game (which tips off at 2 p.m.), and will offer information about the League to interested spectators before, during and after the game.

Granny Basketball, a 501(c)3 corporation, originated in Iowa in 2005. There are now 52 teams in the U.S. and one in Canada, but just three in California. The 650-plus League players in 10 states are women over the age of 50 who may or may not have any basketball experience. They follow 1923 women’s basketball rules: no running, no jumping, no physical contact, two dribbles and play on a court divided into thirds. Granny shots count three points from anywhere in the forward court. And, of course, players wear modest, period correct uniforms consisting of baggy bloomers, middy blouses and long stockings.
