The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is making $72 million in Youth Homelessness Demonstration Program (YHDP) funding available for up to 25 communities nationwide. This funding will be used for developing and implementing coordinated community approaches to prevent and end youth homelessness through the creation of housing and housing focused supportive services.
“Through this program, we can support communities in their efforts to address youth homelessness,” said HUD Agency Head Adrianne Todman. “Preventing and ending youth homelessness requires community effort, the support of our partners and providers, and resources dedicated to our youth.”
This is the ninth round of funding made available under YHDP. Through past funding, grantees have implemented collaborative initiatives with system partners such as child welfare, juvenile justice, and education. Grantees have developed innovative housing projects such as Host Homes and kinship care models, and permanent supportive housing for youth by centering the voices of youth in program design.
“This program has been successful because it’s driven by the people who have expertise in addressing youth homelessness – youth and young adults who have been there themselves,” said Marion McFadden, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Community Planning and Development. “To date, HUD has awarded YHDP funding to 124 communities, representing over half a billion-dollar investment in preventing and ending youth homelessness.”
All YHDP communities are required to establish Youth Action Boards, in which young people with lived experience lead the community effort to design, implement, and improve programs and policies to end youth homelessness locally.
Selected YHDP communities engage in intensive technical assistance to support their local planning and project implementation processes.
Technical assistance offers individual and group learning opportunities to selected communities. Technical assistance materials are available on the HUD Exchange.
The deadline for CoCs to apply is April 17.
