Assembly District 13 member Rhodesia Ransom recently recognized Krista McCoon of Escalon as the 2025 Woman of the Year in a ceremony at the Haggin Museum in Stockton. The late March recognition was part of Women’s History Month, an annual celebration recognizing women’s contributions to California’s progress and innovation. Assemblymember Ransom said McCoon’s efforts to educate citizens about agriculture and its impact on the health, economics, and diversity of San Joaquin County made her well deserving of the honor.

“I am surprised and honored to be recognized for my work in the agriculture community,” said McCoon when asked about the recognition.

McCoon – an Escalon High alum – is the coordinator of the San Joaquin County AgVenture program and works under the San Joaquin Agriculture Commissioner. The program is a county-sponsored agriculture and nutrition education program for third graders. AgVenture allows students a chance to see, hear, smell, and touch agriculture. McCoon also coordinates an agriculture career summit for junior and senior students in the county interested in agriculture careers.

In addition to education programs, McCoon is the San Joaquin Resource Conservation District Administrator. In that role, she administers conservation programs to help farmers and ranchers and conducts the day-to-day business of the district.

McCoon resides in Escalon with her husband Ryan and their two children, Rylee and Kade. She and her husband breed sheep for 4-H and FFA projects.

Assemblywoman Ransom received over 20 nominations from her district. Also recognized for their contributions were Dominique Mellion, Wring Guy Castillo, Jacalyn Davis, Jessie Garza Roderick, Kay Ruhstaller, Kristen Birtwhistle, Lisa Aguilera Lawrenson, Lizeth Granados, Mary Elizabeth Eberhardt, Olga Rodriquez, and Dr. Clara C. Voss.
