car show raffles
Along with the classic cars, the extensive selection of raffle baskets and prizes always draws a huge crowd at the Escalon Lions Club Autumn Car Cruise. This year’s event is on the calendar for Saturday, Sept. 14. Marg Jackson/The Times

The weekend of Sept. 14 and 15 will be a busy one in Escalon, with a pair of events being staged, both for a good cause.

First up, it’s the annual Escalon Lions Club Autumn Cruise, set for Saturday, Sept. 14 in the city’s Main Street Park.

This year marks the 28th annual ‘cruise’ and it is still going strong, drawing hundreds of classic cars, trucks, and even an occasional motorcycle.

Hours for the show are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with registration running from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. for those that haven’t pre-registered their vehicles.

The fun ‘Show and Shine’ with the cars on display runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Judging is conducted from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a downtown ‘cruise’ of the vehicles and the trophy presentations rounding out the day.

Coordinator is Lions Club member Rien Doornenbal; he can be reached at 209-613-2465 for more information about how to get involved with the show; you can also email ELCAutumnCruise@gmail.com

Breakfast will be available from 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Escalon American Legion Post, 1531 Second St., cooked up and served by the Legion members at cost of $10 per ticket.

There will be lunch available through the Lions Club from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and the car show will also include raffles and drawings all day, an $800 participants only drawing, a vendor show with booths and merchandise and music provided by DJ Ike throughout the event.

All proceeds from the annual Autumn Cruise benefit high school scholarships for graduating seniors; the Lions Club puts all its profits back into the community.

All are welcome to attend and enjoy looking through the rows and rows of classic cars, take a chance on the raffle items and enjoy some food.

There will be over 50 separate awards presented to participants.

The annual cruise will be followed up with another fundraising event on Sunday, Sept. 15 as the Escalon Sportsman’s Club presents ‘The Boobie Trap Shoot and Vendor Fair’ in support of the American Cancer Society and the fight against breast cancer.

Registration for the trap shoot starts at 8 a.m.; the Sportsman’s Club is at 25195 E. River Road, Escalon. The competition runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and there will be belt buckles and silver shotshell trophies presented to the winners in multiple categories, ranging from the 16-Yard Champ to the High Overall Champ. In recognition of the fight against breast cancer, there will be pink targets in use for the trap shoot. Participants and attendees alike are encouraged to wear pink to the trap shoot and vendor fair.

Free donuts and coffee will be provided in the morning and lunch will be available at a cost of $15, featuring a BBQ tri-tip sandwich, chips and a drink. The indoor vendor fair will be staged at the clubhouse, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a variety of booths, live music and raffles.

All proceeds from the event will benefit those in the community affected by breast cancer.
