Average gasoline prices in Modesto have fallen 4.7 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.92/gallon on Dec. 30, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 201 stations in Modesto. Prices in Modesto are 11.6 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand 50.2 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has decreased 0.5 cents in the last week and stands at $3.47 per gallon.

According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Modesto was priced at $3.49/gallon while the most expensive was $4.79, a difference of $1.30/gallon. The lowest price in the state was $3.29 while the highest was $6.49, a difference of $3.20/gallon.

The national average price of gasoline has fallen 3.0 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $2.98/gallon on Dec. 30. The national average is down 4.9 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 11.8 cents per gallon lower than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country.

Historical gasoline prices in Modesto and the national average going back 10 years show that the lowest price of $2.48 per gallon was recorded in Modesto on Dec. 30, 2014 while the lowest U.S. average of $2.00 per gallon came on Dec. 30, 2015. Highest price in Modesto was $4.47 per gallon on Dec. 30, 2021 and the highest U.S. average was $3.28 per gallon, also in 2021.

Neighboring areas and their current gas prices include: Stockton - $3.96/gallon, down 1.4 cents from $3.98; Oakland - $4.26, down 0.7 cents from $4.27; and San Jose - $4.25, up 1.6 cents per gallon from last week’s $4.23/gallon.

“After a few weeks of rising gas prices, the national average has reversed course, declining as we close out 2024,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “2024 will mark the second consecutive year of a decline in the national average. In the week ahead, we’ll likely see gas prices fall in some states, while the Great Lakes region may experience another price cycle. Overall, I expect the national average to remain mostly stable.”
