Motorists see slight price drop at pumps

Local and national gas prices have dropped slightly, but the local pump price is still higher than this time last month.

Average gasoline prices in Modesto have fallen 6.0 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $4.13/gallon as of Feb. 3, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 201 stations in Modesto. Prices in Modesto are 3.6 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 7.5 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has decreased 2.4 cents in the last week and stands at $3.62 per gallon.

According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Modesto was priced at $3.67/gallon while the most expensive was $4.91, a difference of $1.24/gallon. The lowest price in the state was $3.55 while the highest was $6.79, a difference of $3.24/gallon.

The national average price of gasoline has fallen 3.5 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.04/gallon on Feb 3. The national average is down 1.4 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 10.3 cents per gallon lower than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country.

Neighboring areas and their current gas prices include: Stockton - $4.21/gallon, up 3.8 cents from last week’s $4.17; Oakland - $4.41, up 2.0 cents per gallon from $4.39; and San Jose - $4.32, up 0.6 cents per gallon from last week’s $4.32/gallon.

Historical gasoline prices in Modesto and the national average going back 10 years show the lowest price in the state was $2.20 on Feb. 3, 2016 and the highest was $4.36 per gallon in 2022. The lowest U.S. average of $1.78 per gallon was recorded on Feb. 3, 2016 with the highest of $3.45 recorded in 2023.
