November ballot races shaping up for voters
vote

Four candidates will vie for two available seats on the Escalon City Council in November.

Filing deadline for races – if at least one incumbent filed – was Friday, Aug. 9 and the race in Escalon features a pair of incumbents and a pair of challengers. The top two vote getters in the Nov. 5 election will win the four-year terms on the council.

David Bellinger, currently serving as mayor, was appointed previously to the council to fill out an unexpired two-year term and now has qualified for the ballot, running for a full four-year term.

Fellow incumbent Shawn M. Strohman is also seeking re-election; it would be his second term.

Challengers filing to seek the council seats are Gabriella Estrella and Jeff Kay.

Voters in Escalon will also be asked to cast their votes on a one percent sales tax increase, with that additional one cent per dollar staying in the city. It needs a simple majority of voters, not two-thirds, for passage.

If approved by voters, the tax would bring in an estimated $900,000 to the city coffers annually.

Escalon Consolidated Fire Protection District has two candidates on the ballot, for two positions, with Jason Koops and Laura Catrina qualifying to run. School board seats up for election are in Trustee districts 3 and 4; incumbent Nick Caton in District 3 and Martha Coelho in District 4 are unopposed.

Five candidates are seeking to fill three posts on the Farmington Rural Fire Protection District, with Kelly Ogilvie, Jeff Briggs, Frank ‘Ed’ Bracco, Jr., Jeremiah Mulvihill and Nancy Lemos all qualifying for the ballot.
