October starts with price dip at pumps

Prices in Modesto and several surrounding cities showed a drop in gas costs this past week, continuing a slight downward trend.

Average gasoline prices in Modesto have fallen 3.5 cents per gallon, averaging $4.56/gallon as of Oct. 7, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 201 stations in Modesto. Prices in Modesto are 1.4 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 95.4 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel is unchanged from a week ago and stands at $3.54 per gallon.

According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Modesto was priced at $3.75/gallon while the most expensive was $5.39, a difference of $1.64/gallon. The lowest price in the state was $3.49 while the highest was $6.79, a difference of $3.30/gallon.

Neighboring areas and their current gas prices include: Stockton - $4.53/gallon, down 10.5 cents from last week’s $4.64; Oakland - $4.80, down 5.1 cents per gallon from $4.85; and San Jose - $4.75/gallon, down 4.8 cents per gallon from last week’s $4.79/gallon.

The national average price of gasoline has fallen 4.6 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.13/gallon on Oct. 7. The national average is down 11.6 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 56.2 cents per gallon lower than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country.

Locally, the highest Oct. 7 price in the last 10 years at the gas pumps in Modesto was $6.10 per gallon in 2022 while the lowest was $2.61 per gallon in 2016.

The lowest average national price on Oct. 7 in the last 10 years was $2.18 per gallon in 2020 with the highest of $3.90 per gallon recorded in 2022.
