The last Saturday of April will be observed as a community volunteer work day in several cities throughout the region and Escalon residents also have the opportunity to be of service.

Love Escalon is on the schedule from 8 a.m. to noon on April 26 and volunteers are currently being sought for a number of work sites around the city.

Escalon Chamber of Commerce is the coordinating organization, with the work day kicking off at 8 a.m.; the Love Escalon initiative through the Chamber is a partner with Love Our Cities.

Among the projects in need of volunteers: the Park and Ride Parking Lot Clean Up at Main Street, with the goal of cleaning up all the flower beds lining the area between BMO and Show Off Motors; Hogan Park Picnic Table Painting, at 1051 Escalon Ave., come paint the benches under the covered area at Hogan-Ennis Park. A baseball field revamp is slated there as well, adding warm up spots for the softball pitchers and a warm up mound for baseball pitchers. Bring gloves and a shovel if you want to get in on this project.

The horseshoe pit clean-up project at the park is full.

There is also an opportunity to be of service at the C.A.R.E. Center, the community food cupboard facility on Second Street, with volunteers needed to help clean up and organize at the site.

Deep cleaning is on the schedule at the Escalon Youth Center, with inside and outside work planned.

Main Street planter boxes will get a freshening up, with cleaning and re-planting of the boxes planned, while volunteers are also needed at Van Allen Elementary School at 21051 East Highway 120, to re-paint the foursquare court on site and fix soccer nets.

Other events occurring during the day will be Senior Bingo, offered at the Escalon Library for local senior citizens, starting at 10 a.m.

The library, 1540 Second St., is also scheduled to do a bottle cap art project as part of the day’s activities.
