Several New Laws Take Effect In July
CAL OUTLINE

Effective July 1, several new laws were enacted in California. These laws aim to regulate the firearm industry, establish a state holiday, and seal criminal records. Here’s a brief overview of the legislation.

AB 1594, known as the Firearm Industry Responsibility Act, introduces a new standard of conduct for the firearm industry and facilitates civil suits against firearm retailers in California.

SB 731 allows for the permanent sealing of most convictions on an individual’s criminal record, provided they have completed their incarceration terms and remained conviction-free for at least four years.

AB 2011 and SB 6 simplify the construction process for affordable housing developments, particularly in areas zoned for office, retail, or parking use. These laws also enhance health benefits and wage regulations for construction contractors.

AB 1655 designates June 19, also known as Juneteenth, as a state holiday in California.

AB 1667 prohibits the state teachers’ pension fund, CalSTRS, from reclaiming overpayments detected in audit reports from retired teachers.

SB 301 targets the online sale of stolen goods, mandating that “high-volume third-party” sellers provide contact information and bank account details.

AB 2960 establishes licensing, training, and registration requirements for California bounty hunters, prompted by advocacy efforts following a tragic incident in Palm Springs in 2021.

AB 2043 mandates licensing for California bounty hunters and stems from the advocacy of a family who lost their son due to an illegally operating bounty hunter.
