Some people opened their yard and garage sales early on Saturday, hoping to beat the heat.

The unseasonably hot weather may have kept the crowd numbers down slightly but the annual citywide yard sale day in Escalon on Oct. 5 nonetheless drew plenty of shoppers to peruse the wide variety of wares for sale.

Books, clothes, furniture, home furnishings, sporting equipment, even cold bottled waters and homemade baked goods were part of the offerings.

From one end of the city to the other, residents cleaned out closets, cupboards and found those long-forgotten and no longer needed items stored in the garage to sell to others. Cars and trucks made their way slowly along the city streets, drivers alternately looking for merchandise to catch their eye or a parking space and, in many cases, both.

There was also a book sale hosted at the Escalon Library, hoping to draw in some extra shoppers.

On Mission Court, the sibling team of Rylee, 7, and little brother Kade McCoon, 4, made the most of the day, as they had a lemonade stand, selling cold drinks and cookies.

“We’re going to go to Disneyland and my mom said ‘if you want spending money, you have to earn the spending money by yourself’,” big sister Rylee said of why they set up the stand.

Though they hadn’t counted the proceeds while the sale was still going on early Saturday afternoon, mom Krista said the lemonade stand did a pretty brisk business throughout the day.

Many local youngsters took the opportunity to put their gently used toys and stuffed animals up for sale, hoping to earn some extra money.

Elsewhere in town, Justin York of Bite Back Outpost was busy grilling up bacon wrapped hot dogs, drawing in hungry shoppers.

He and his brother-in-law set up their grill Thursday through Monday evenings on Main Street to serve up some grilled fare, and he saw the yard sale day as an opportunity to introduce the business to those coming to town for the day.

This year marked the 32nd annual Citywide Yard Sale Day and, after more than three decades, it is still going strong.

“Just random things,” shopper Natalie Torres of neighboring Manteca said of what she was on the search for Saturday as she stopped by a sale on Sanchez.

And, with a few items in hand as she left, she said she was happy with those random finds and planned to visit a few more sales before heading back home.
