After holding steady for a week, local gas prices are once again seeing a slight decline.

Average gasoline prices in Modesto have fallen 6.2 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $4.11/gallon on Monday, Nov. 18, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 201 stations in Modesto. Prices in Modesto are 39.5 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand 52.4 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has declined 0.4 cents in the last week and stands at $3.51 per gallon.

According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Modesto was priced at $3.43/gallon while the most expensive was $4.79, a difference of $1.36/gallon. The lowest price in the state was $3.43 while the highest was $7.89, a difference of $4.46/gallon.

The national average price of gasoline has fallen 0.7 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.02/gallon on Nov. 18. The national average is down 15.2 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 27.6 cents per gallon lower than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country.

“Several states saw gas prices jump or ‘cycle’ last week, a behavior in which gas prices climb significantly after falling below a station’s replacement price. This led the national average to see little meaningful change from last week, with many states experiencing a slow decline, offsetting the few states that did see big jumps,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “However, the good news is that those states that saw large jumps last week will likely see some of the biggest declines at the pump this week, paving the way for the national average to fall, potentially below $3 per gallon, just in time for Thanksgiving, with GasBuddy tracking 28 states already below that level.”

Neighboring areas and their current gas prices include: Stockton - $4.15/gallon, down 6.3 cents from $4.21; Oakland - $4.42, down 7.1 cents per gallon from $4.49; and San Jose - $4.40/gallon, down 8.5 cents per gallon from last week’s $4.48/gallon.

Historical gasoline prices in Modesto and the national average going back 10 years show the highest Nov. 18 price in Modesto coming in at $4.96 per gallon in 2022 and the highest U.S. average of $3.67 per gallon also recorded in 2022. Lowest Modesto price, $2.45 per gallon, occurred in 2016; lowest U.S. average on Nov. 18 was $2.11 per gallon in 2020.
