A one-day only sign-up is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 7 at Escalon Fire Station 1, at 1749 Coley Ave., in anticipation of the upcoming Christmas toy giveaway for local youngsters.
The sign-ups will be taken from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on that Saturday. Fire department officials noted that, due to the demand for toys each year, they can only accommodate residents who live within the boundaries of the Escalon Fire District.
The giveaway itself will be hosted at the Escalon Fire Station on Thursday, Dec. 19 starting at 10 a.m.
Those coming to the sign-up day are asked to provide proof of residency and a social security card for each child and/or a health card.
The collection boxes will be going out soon as well, and will be scattered throughout the community, being placed in several businesses and schools. Donations of new, unwrapped toys for all ages are sought. The goal is to be able to provide a bag of toys for each child signing up, and a crew of volunteers meets early morning the day of the distribution to bag up the items.
The Christmas Toy Drive and Giveaway is a joint effort of the Escalon Fire Department, Escalon American Legion Post 263 and Escalon Police Department.
