Gasoline prices in Modesto have fallen 5.3 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.13/gallon Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 201 stations in Modesto. This compares with the national average that has fallen 6.6 cents per gallon versus last week to $2.25/gallon, according to GasBuddy.

Average gasoline prices on Dec. 31 in Modesto have ranged widely over the last five years: $2.86/gallon in 2017, $2.57 in 2016, $2.50 in 2015, $2.47 in 2014 and $3.53/gallon in 2013.

Including the change locally during the past week, prices on Dec. 31 were 26.7 cents per gallon higher than a year ago and are 21.0 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has dropped 21.3 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 23.8 cents per gallon lower than a year ago.

Areas near Modesto and their current gas price climate include: Stockton - $3.23/gallon, down 5.0 cents per gallon from last week’s $3.28; Oakland - $3.44, down 3.2 cents from $3.47; and San Jose - $3.42/gallon, down 1.4 cents per gallon from last week’s $3.43.

“As the national average price of gasoline continues to test multi-year lows, U.S. motorists are keeping over $250 million in their pocket every single day versus 80 days ago. The plunge has seen sub-$2 gas prices show up at over a third of all gas stations in the country while 11 states have seen average prices dip under the $2 level.” said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy.
