Audrey Mensinger Gillispie, age 97, passed away September 4, 2024, in Modesto, CA. Audrey was born in Modesto and was a lifelong resident in Escalon, CA. She was a registered Pharmacist for over 50 years. She attended Lone Tree Grammar school, graduated from Escalon High School, was a second-generation graduate from Modesto Junior College, was one of three women in her class and attained her final educational degree with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from USC in 1951. She married Robert (Bill) Gillispie (passed 2012) in 1951 and lived the majority of their 60 married years on a walnut and almond ranch outside of Escalon.

Deeply interested in education, Audrey was the first woman to be elected to the Escalon Unified School District Board of Education. Audrey served on this board for over 25 years, including two terms as President. She was also elected to the San Joaquin County School Board Association, including positions of President and long-term member of that Executive Committee.

Audrey’s love for education and promotion of children continued throughout her lifetime with active involvement in various clubs and associations, including President of Van Allen Grammar School Mother’s Club, 4-H Leader, American Association of University Women, Manteca Federated Women, Eastern Star, San Joaquin County Election Board, Friends of the Escalon Library and Escalon Historical Society. Prior to Bill’s passing, they had the honor of being named “Mr. & Mrs. Escalon” for their long-time service to the Escalon community.

She is survived by her three children: daughter Diane Alcorn (Douglas) of Escalon, son Robert (Bob) Gillispie (Diane) of Escalon and daughter Linda Hischier of Modesto. Also four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Private graveside service at Burwood Cemetery on September 17, 2024. The family would like to express their appreciation to all that assisted with her care.
