Edna Young Barnes, 91, died Tuesday, March 6 of pneumonia.
She was born in Rock Creek, Idaho and lived in multiple states before settling in Escalon in 1961.
Mrs. Barnes was a public health nurse, caring for people for many years. The final years of her long career were given to Stanislaus County's Foothill Horizons Outdoor Education Camp, where she was dubbed 'Grandma' by all the campers and employees.
After retirement, she was an active volunteer for the Escalon Library and an active member of St. Matthias Church in Oakdale.
She was a strong, independent woman with a love of forests, flowers, and all God's creatures, a love that she passed on to many.
She is survived by her daughters, Pamela Harris of Valparaiso, Ind., Diane Russell of Oakland, and Sarah Barnes of Kent, Wash.; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Barnes.
A memorial service will be at 11a.m. on Saturday, April 21 at St. Matthias Anglican Church, 107 S. First Ave., Oakdale. Place of interment will be at Arlington Cemetery with her husband.
