Steven H. French (Steve), 76, passed away at his home in Manteca, CA on June 4, 2024 surrounded by his loved ones and beloved canine companions. Steve was born August 26, 1947 the only child of Jack and Doris French in Glendale, CA. Steve grew up in Torrance, CA. The proximity to the LA area beaches allowed Steve to develop a lifelong love for surfing. After graduating from South Torrance High in 1965 Steve enlisted in the Air Force. He served four years before attending college at Stanislaus State University in Turlock, California. Steve played basketball from 1971-1972 and baseball for his remaining college years. He graduated in 1975 with a Bachelors of Arts in Physical Education and completed a credential program shortly after. With his credential program completed Steve was a substitute teacher at various local schools before landing a permanent position at Escalon High School where he taught for 38 years.

Steve was involved in coaching throughout that time, mostly JV boys baseball and JV girls basketball. He also collaborated with other Escalon coaches to start many of Escalon’s Youth Sports programs, many of which are still around today. Steve also started the Peer Interaction Team at the High School which he claimed to be “a highlight of his life” as he got to work with many neat kids. Steve had a significant impact on countless students with his calm demeanor and ability to make connections with them. Often described by his students and players as “one of the best teachers/coaches they ever had.” In his early retirement years Steve ushered for the Sacramento Kings and Stockton Ports. Steve’s love for these sports and their fans made this the ultimate retirement pastime.

Steve is survived by his wife of 39 years Vicki, daughters Michelle (Jesse), Sandi (Andrew) and son, Brian (Kaity). He was papa to his seven wonderful grandkids; Amy (16), Jillian (14), Harper (8), Garrett (8), Hudson (6), Warren (2) and Raegan (11 months).

A service will be held on Thursday, June 27, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at the Escalon Community Center, a celebration of life immediately following. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to the Escalon Sports Boosters/EHS Girls Basketball (P.O. Box 251, Escalon, CA 95320).
