Completing a solid campaign, finishing second in the Trans-Valley League and then crafting a fourth place finish at the Division 5 meet, Escalon’s varsity girls golf coach Chris Casazza said the team accomplished many goals this year.
The Sac-Joaquin Section Division 5 Tournament was hosted at Peach Tree Golf and Country Club in Marysville on Oct. 28.
“It was a nice course, a great setting for a playoff tournament,” Casazza said. “The greens were fast, the fairways smooth, and the rough was thick.”
With the venue being so far away, the team took off early morning and joined 14 other teams on the course, as well as some individual qualifiers.
“The TVL was well represented. Escalon, Hilmar, and Ripon Christian qualified to go as teams, as well as individuals from Ripon, Sonora and Hughson,” Casazza said. “Hilmar placed first as a team. Our girls were very happy for them. Our Escalon girls had gotten to know their girls over the past couple of years, so it pretty much was like congratulating friends on their victory.”
Escalon had been chasing Hilmar all season, finishing second to them in TVL play.
“It was nice to see them move on, they definitely deserved it,” Casazza said.
After Hilmar, Colfax finished second, followed by Union Mine in third and Escalon in fourth.
“I was proud of our fourth place finish. There were some good teams there, and we held our own,” Casazza said. “The girls played great and I think they had a lot of fun. It was an experience that I hope they remember for a long time.”
Elizabeth Allan paced the effort with a 96, qualifying her to move on to the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Tournament as an individual. Genevieve Casazza carded a 109, Rose Percey also shot a 109, Taylor Bruns carded a 132, Samantha Bruns came in at 134.
“Our team score was 580. In this tournament five scores were counted instead of the usual four,” noted the coach. “It was bittersweet for seniors Genevieve and Rose. It was their final high school golf match, but it was the playoffs and they were honored to be there.”
Allan was due to participate in the Masters Tournament this week at the Reserve at Spanos Park in Stckton.
“We were all so happy for her and proud of her,” Casazza said.
Seniors Casazza and Percey, along with their coach, were scheduled to travel to the Masters with Allan to offer support and cheer her on.
