Escalon High School sophomore Kaity Bojorquez is keeping busy with soccer even while the Lady Cougars are not on the field, playing with a Stockton team. She was a guest player over the Thanksgiving holidays on an Under 17 team that is currently ranked 18th in the region. She scored the only goal for the team during the San Diego Surf Cup Tournament.
Bojorquez plays for the California Cougars out of Stockton and is on the U16 team coached by Matt Kusanovich. The U17 team that she was a guest player for at the tourney is a premier team, also coached by Kusanovich that was ranked 36th nationally going into the Surf Cup. She was invited to play as a guest player on the U17 team, a huge honor since she only started in the sport in 2001.
The San Diego Surf Soccer Club puts on two prestigious soccer tournaments each year, both played at the San Diego Polo Club in Del Mar. The Surf Cup in July is for boys and girls, the Surf Cup in November is just for girls.
Bojorquez saw action in all three games the Stockton team played in the tournament, playing at holding midfielder. They played first against RSF Attack out of Rancho Santa Fe and after falling behind 1-0, Bojorquez took advantage of the goalie coming out of the box and kicked the ball up and over a defender to score the game-tying goal. The shot came off her left foot and the game ultimately ended in a 1-1 tie. The second game was against the number two nationally ranked Slammers FC from Newport Beach. The teams battled in a scoreless first half, the Slammers punched one goal through in the second half and held on for the 1-0 win.
In what proved to be their final game of the tournament, the Cougars lost a 1-0 decision to Avalanche Premier - Black out of Sandy, Utah.
There were over 29,000 people in attendance at the tournament and more than 170 college scouts, looking for potential players for the collegiate level.
After competing as a guest player with the U17 team, Bojorquez rejoined her U16 squad and was slated to play in a tournament in Manteca. She also plans to play for the Escalon Lady Cougars in the spring.
