It was a successful trip for the Escalon varsity Lady Cougar golfers on Monday, traveling to the mid-season tournament at Micke Grove.

“We finished second behind Ripon. Team score 425, Ripon 359, third was Argonaut with 438,” said head coach Kristie Cathcart. “Lucy Allbaugh had the team low score with a 95. At the end of year tournament I hope we can shoot closer to 400.”

Wednesday the home course at Escalon was host site for a JV tournament.

Four JV girls took part for Escalon, Sarah Bava, Bella Ambro, Arianna Huntley and Gracie Bracco. There were a total of 33 girls participating including those from Escalon, Hughson, Livingston, Merced and Gregori.

“They played 18 holes, nine from white tees and nine from red tees. Scores ranged from low 80s to 130s,” Cathcart noted.

Thursday the varsity girls hosted Argonaut and Escalon carded a 165-181 win.

Pacing the team was  Allbaugh with a 38, followed by Mikayla Schut and Ella MacKinnon at 42, Kara Kennedy at 43, Ella Adams with a 46 and Jianna Cereghino at 56.

“I thought this match would be closer than it was,” Cathcart said. “With this win we open the gap between second and third in league.”

The Lady Cougars are solidly in second with Ripon in the top spot.

A busy week on the links included scheduled matches Monday, Sept. 30 against Waterford at home and Tuesday, Oct. 1 against Amador at Castle Oaks, after The Times went to press, with a Thursday match with Ripon at Spring Creek.

"We played with a lot of energy and effort from the start and jumped on Hilmar pretty good. We maintained a 20-plus point lead for much of the game, even approaching 30 at one point in the second half,” head coach Nate Bartelink said of the Cougars shaking off an earlier home loss and winning big on the road.
