Dropping an 8-2 decision to Sierra in the championship game of the Linden Tournament on Tuesday, June 10, the Cougar A team battled back with a win at Modesto Christian, but fell short at home against Patterson.
The B team, meanwhile, picked up a pair of victories in action against MC and Patterson. In tournament play, Sierra took a 2-0 lead in the first.
"We scored one in the fourth and one in the fifth to tie it," explained coach Greg Largent.
Travis Cardoza had an RBI single to drive in the first run in the fourth, Josh Miguel notched an RBI triple for the run in the fifth, but that's where the Cougar offense stopped.
"In the sixth, we gave up four runs, then two more in the seventh," Largent said of settling for second place in the tournament. "We hit the ball hard, just right at people."
Wednesday on the road at Modesto Christian, it was a 5-1 win for the B team. Escalon scored two runs in the first, with RBI singles from James Hill and Colton Smith accounting for the early tallies. Josh Vandagriff had an RBI single in the second and a run also scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0. Modesto Christian got a single run in the fourth and Escalon put one more on the board in the fifth with a sacrifice fly from Miguel.
"We sent out four different left handers against them," noted Largent.
Those included Tyler Vitale, Jacob Kaiser, Dominic Louro and Kris Mayfield.
The A team crushed MC by a final of 16-6.
"They actually were ahead, 2-1," Largent said of the early going.
But the Cougars got things going in the third, scoring two runs on a two-RBI double from Nick Largent, then scored eight in the fourth inning to put the game away.
