Two more wins were notched by Escalon’s varsity flag football girls this past week, including a 28-6 romp over Tracy and a league win at Los Banos.

Wednesday, Sept. 13 hosting Tracy, the varsity squad was in control for most of the contest.

Jasmine Barron got the edge on the team’s first offensive play from scrimmage following a defensive stop, and ran 60 yards for a touchdown.

On the following possession, leading tackler Andrea Fuentes Calderon (six flag pulls) “read a Tracy option perfectly and intercepted the pitch,” said head coach Steve Largent, taking it all the way down to the 5-yard line.

“Andrea’s play flipped the game upside down and was the tone setter for the afternoon,” Largent said.

Sammy Lang then connected with Rayah McNulty on the next play and the host team took a commanding 14-0 lead. Violette Kent added a touchdown on the ground as well as another interception on defense.

“It was our best 40 minutes of football we played all season and we were very proud of the girls after a weeklong stint of no games,” the coach pointed out.

Thursday, they took the long bus ride down to Los Banos and found themselves in a Western Athletic Conference slugfest.

“We moved the ball well in the first half but stalled inside the 5-yard line twice and found ourselves down 6-0 at halftime,” Largent said.

During the break, the coach said the girls were reassured and did not go into panic mode.

“Our girls were woken up after a big collision on our QB which did not result in a penalty but it did result in the girls banding together and it was all Cougars after that,” the coach explained.

Lang found McNulty in the end zone to tie it 6-6 and the defense buckled down after some halftime adjustments, turned the Tigers over and Lang found the end zone with her legs to make it 12-6. That ended up being the final score after the defense held strong and stopped the Tigers near midfield on their final possession.

Lang was 7-for-11 for 146 yards and a touchdown passing; she also rushed six times for 77 yards and a score. McNulty had three receptions for 83 yards and a touchdown, Hannah Wampler was the leading tackler with six. McNulty, Lang and Kent all had an interception.

Games this week were scheduled against Central Catholic and the Ceres Bulldogs, with a road game Thursday at Ceres a league contest.

JV

The Escalon JV girls shut out Tracy 26-0 on Wednesday, with a breakout game throwing the ball from Tyli Holback.

“She connected with Adrianna Romero for a 50-yard gain on our first drive and connected with Rebecca Wampler for a score and Ashlyn Paxman,” said head coach Joseph Dalpogetti. “Brooklyn Dugo had a pick six.”

Thursday, the girls were on the road to open JV WAC play against Los Banos.

“Rebecca Wampler scored on the first play of the game on a 60-yard run. She added two pick sixes for a three TD game,” Dalpogetti said.

Bella Alcala got in the end zone as well, with the JV taking a 36-6 win.

Los Banos scored on the last play of the game to avoid the shutout.

Escalon is now 6-1 overall and 1-0 in WAC play; they continue the WAC schedule Thursday at Ceres.
